I was standing on the platform of Asok BTS station like Batman surveying his city when I spied these two dine-in options opposite Terminal 21 mall. One is a traditional fluorescent tube, non air-conditioned restaurant of Thai stir fry and curries. The other is a beautiful, standalone wooden building with inviting yellow lights peering through the dense foliage.
From the outside, Hemingway's looks like a romantic old dame that enchants you inside, throws away the key and traps you forever. Everything's beautifully old world, from the intricate lamps to the peekaboo window curtains that frame bashfully.
There is a separate small and cosy bar where drinks and cocktails are served within its compound.
Over at Suda's, it's brash and totally unapologetic as tourists and Thais find their way here, order, eat and leave. During our 45-minute stay, I saw quite a few Americans, Europeans, Japanese, Chinese and Koreans.
The menu has both pictures and English text but no price tags. Before you groan in frustration and utter an expletive in your native tongue, please know that our bill for four dishes (chicken pineapple curry, pork omelette, fried morning glory and mussels) plus two Pepsi came up to only 500 baht.
